Louth is a special place, rich in agricultural history and an abundance of local farm produce, blessed with Georgian and Victorian architectural gems and boasting one of the nation’s finest parish churches. A soaring 15th century masterpiece, the spacious church of St James has the highest steeple of any Anglican church in England.
Another outstanding attraction of Louth is shopping. Unlike many a High Street in Britain, Louth sustains a wonderful mix of independent retailers, many family-owned and selling everything from food (see under Louth Food Town), fashion and furniture to hardware, electrical goods and all kinds of crafts. There are multiple award winning butchers and bakers, a specialist cheese shop and much more. Louth sausages are known across the land and pick up prizes by the dozen. Such is the quality and enjoyment of Louth shopping that people come from far and wide across Lincolnshire for ‘a day out’.
The retail experience extends to Louth’s street markets, held every Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, often with a farmers’ market thrown in. The Partnership is proud to foster this vital feature of the town by organising theme markets during the year. These include the Louth Food Festival in July, Victorian Family Fayre in October and the Christmas Crafts Market in early December.
Starting in 2012, these events will be complemented by another Partnership initiative, the Louth Festival. This three-week extravaganza showcasing the best of the region’s music, arts, crafts and food takes place in July (keep up to date on this website’s events calendar). Indeed, the town enjoys a rich cultural heritage and has a thriving cinema complex, several choirs and its own theatre, the Riverhead.
