Louth Town Council

Ever wondered about the role and responsibilities of Louth Town Council? Then read on…

Louth Town Council consists of 21 Councillors, 3 for each of the 7 wards in the parish, who are elected by the people of Louth every 4 years. It currently has 2 vacancies which will be advertised after the General Election takes place.

Meetings are held fortnightly in the Town Hall on Tuesday nights at 7.30pm and are preceded by a public forum at 7.15pm. Members of the public are welcome to speak on items or bring issues to Councillors attention who will do everything they can to deal with them or liaise with other responsible authorities. The Committees are supported by working groups, the Town Clerk, Secretary, and members of the public. Councillors are widely involved in all aspects of the community and are representatives on many local groups and organisations.

The Council is responsible for London Road Cemetery and its burial records and is currently working with the Local Family History Society to transcribe the records.

The Council can be consulted on a wide range of issues including Local Development Plans, Planning Applications, Highway Improvements, and closures or changes to public facilities and services in the town. It is also working closely with the Interim Town Centre Partnership on a number of initiatives.

Councillors have a responsibility to make sure that the precept is spent wisely. They are responsible for assets of the Town, which include art works, Town Centre CCTV and Christmas Illuminations. The Council also funds local events such as the Christmas lights switch on and Crib Service and the Lovely Louth competition. Councillors also consider grant requests from local community organisations through a yearly grant giving exercise.

The Council observes Civic traditions such as having a robed Mayor who attends many events in the town and around the county to promote Louth. The Mayor hosts a Civic Parade and Church Service annually, the next will be held on 4th July 2010 and will involve the Armed Services veterans, cadet forces and youngsters parading together in the town.

Louth Town Council office is open Monday to Friday 9am to 1pm and can be contacted on 01507 329405 or www.louthtowncouncil.gov.uk.
